160 marks · 100% of the GCSE

Most revision guides show you a good answer and tell you to copy it. That doesn’t work, because you never find out how it was made. This pack takes every question on both papers and walks you through the same six steps — decode it, learn the method, watch it built in front of you, compare Grade 4, 6 and 8 versions of the same answer, write your own, then check it. Then you sit both papers again under exam conditions, with space to write.

Built for the AQA GCSE English Language (8700) specification — for students sitting the exam in summer 2027, whether you’re resitting or sitting it for the first time.

The problem this workbook solves

Why model answers do not transfer

You read a model answer, agree that it is good, and still cannot produce one — because nobody showed you how it was made. So you revise by reading rather than writing, sit the paper cold, and find out your mark without finding out what to change. The difficulty is rarely effort. It is never having watched a strong answer built from a blank page.

This workbook breaks that skill into clear, manageable steps, helping you understand what examiners are looking for and apply it independently.

Who this is for

Built for a specific gap, not a general topic

This workbook is suitable for you if you are:

  • Preparing for AQA GCSE English Language
  • Preparing for the AQA 8700 papers, especially if you are revising without a teacher to mark your work
  • Working independently, with a tutor, in class or revising at home
What you’ll learn

Five things you’ll be able to do

Nothing about the Grade 8 answer is a cleverer idea than the Grade 4. The difference is in how it’s built — and how is something you can practise.

Decode

Work out what a question is actually asking, what the command words mean, and how long to spend on it.

Method

Follow a numbered method for every question type, so you never stare at a blank page.

Climb

See exactly what changes between a Grade 4, a Grade 6 and a Grade 8 answer to the same question.

Timing

Pace both papers properly — 45 minutes on reading, 45 on writing, with planning built in.

Applying

Apply these skills confidently in exam-style questions.

How the workbook works

Six steps, ten questions, twice over

The activities build gradually from explanation and guided practice to independent exam-style work. Every question in the pack gets the same treatment, so the method becomes automatic before you sit the papers cold. You can work through the book in order, or use individual sections to target a particular weakness.

1

Modelled

Decode it · The method · Watch me build it, written out loud with every choice explained.

2

Compared

Three answers at Grade 4, 6 and 8 with margin notes, then a short How you climb naming the one change that lifts you.

3

Yours

Your turn gives a fresh task with sentence starters and ruled space, then a tick-list to check yourself.

What’s inside

What you get across the 84 pages

Paper 1

A gothic fiction extract — a narrator arriving at Ravensmere Hall at dusk. Questions 1–5, modelled step by step.

Paper 2

Two writers meeting a tiger: an 1887 hunting memoir and a 2024 magazine essay. Questions 1–5, modelled step by step.

Exam conditions

Both papers again, clean, with write-in space and no modelling — the real test.

2026-ready

Question 1 in the new multiple-choice format, and the narrative option as a story opening.

Back matter

Glossary of every term · toolkit of verbs, words, sentences and punctuation · mark schemes at a glance.

Track it

Self-assessment guidance and a progress tracker so you can see movement between attempts.

By the end of this workbook

Where this gets you

By the end of the workbook you’ll have sat two full papers, seen every question built from scratch, and marked your own work against the criteria the examiner uses — with a clearer understanding of how to improve the quality of your answers.

Sitting a paper tells you your mark. Watching one built tells you how to get a better one.
