Got a Grade 3 in GCSE English? Here’s what to do next.

A 3 is not a long way off a 4. It usually means a handful of marks across two papers — not that you don’t understand the subject. What you do next depends on knowing which marks went missing.

November resit

Preparing for November 2026?

The October half-term intensive gives students six focused online days, 24 hours of teaching, daily writing and feedback from a practising AQA examiner. The full course is £600. Families can meet the teacher at the free welcome session before deciding.

Today

Before you leave school or college

Ask for your marks, paper by paper

Not just the grade. Your centre can tell you the mark on each paper, and sometimes each question. This is the most useful thing you can get hold of today, and it gets harder to obtain once term starts.

Ask about a review of marking

If you were within a few marks of a 4, say so and ask what the process is. There are deadlines in September and your centre has to submit it, not you — so raise it now rather than in three weeks.

Check what your next course needs

Some require a 4 before you start. Many let you begin and resit alongside. Ask the college directly rather than assuming the worst.

Timing

November 2026 or summer 2027?

November 2026

Exams run 2–11 November. Entries close around 4 October. Results arrive on 14 January 2027. That is roughly ten weeks of preparation — which suits you if you were close, and if you already know roughly what went wrong.

Summer 2027

A full year, taught alongside your course. Better if the gap is wider, or if November is going to be a scramble.

Most colleges enter resit students for November automatically. You can ask not to be.

Worth knowing

The number nobody mentions

Last summer, 70.6% of sixteen-year-olds achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language. Among those resitting at 17–19, it was 19.7%.

That gap is real, and it is better to know about it than be surprised by it. But it is not a statement about resit students. It is about conditions: resitters usually get a fraction of the teaching time, often in a class that meets once a week, alongside a full course.

The figure that cuts the other way: among candidates aged 20 and over, 33.2% passed. People who came back to it later, with a clearer idea of what they were fixing, did substantially better than the cohort pushed straight back in. Preparation you choose beats preparation you are timetabled into.

What to revise

Four things that cost most of the marks

The instinct after a grade 3 is to revise everything again. It is the least efficient thing you can do — you will spend most of your time on parts you can already do.

Analysis that stops too early

You identify the technique, say what it does, and the paragraph ends. The marks are in what comes after that.

Vocabulary that is accurate but flat

Nothing wrong with it. It just is not doing any work. You reach for the same forty words.

Punctuation with no range

Commas and full stops only. Question 5 rewards deliberate variety, and it is one of the fastest things to fix.

Question 5 structure

Running out of things to say halfway through, or writing without a shape.

Pick the one that sounds most like you. Not all four.

Teaching

If you want teaching, not just materials

There is a six-day GCSE English resit course running over October half term — Monday 26 to Saturday 31 October 2026, online, four hours a day. It is built for the AQA papers and taught by a practising AQA examiner, and it finishes two days before Paper 1.

Students write every day and get feedback aimed at what to change next time, rather than a grade. Before booking, there is a welcome session on Saturday 17 October where you can meet the teacher and ask whatever you need to.
