By Book 4 the vocabulary should be showing up in your writing without you planning it. This book targets the areas students reach last: Difficult People, Precision & Evidence, Cause, Effect & Position, Moral & Social Atmosphere, Avoidance & Escape and Damage, Decay & Recovery. It also carries a second register unit — Voice & Tone: Informal Register II — so the control you built in Book 3 gets a second pass.
Built for the AQA GCSE English Language (8700) specification — for students sitting the exam in summer 2027, whether you’re resitting or sitting it for the first time.

Why ambitious vocabulary runs out halfway
The first paragraph is strong. By the third you are back to the words you always use, and the answer reads as though two different people wrote it. The same thing happens with evidence and cause: proof, doubt and consequence all get handled with because, so and shows. The difficulty is rarely a small vocabulary. It is not sustaining the good vocabulary you already have across a whole answer.
This workbook breaks that skill into clear, manageable steps, helping you understand what examiners are looking for and apply it independently.
Built for a specific gap, not a general topic
This workbook is suitable for you if you are:
- Preparing for AQA GCSE English Language
- Already using ambitious vocabulary and wanting it to become consistent
- Working independently, with a tutor, in class or revising at home
Five things you’ll be able to do
Level 4 is not a harder set of words. It is the same reaching, done every time and always for a reason — and that is what Book 4 drills.
Write about proof, accuracy and doubt in language precise enough to survive a Question 4 evaluation.
Trace cause, effect and consequence across a paragraph without repeating “because” and “so”.
Describe difficult people specifically — the vocabulary for evasion, obstruction and self-interest.
Build a moral or social atmosphere in descriptive writing, not just a physical one.
Apply these skills confidently in exam-style questions.
Guided first, independent by the end
The activities build gradually from explanation and guided practice to independent exam-style work. Same eight exercises, fourth time round — by now the format should be invisible and all your attention should be on the words. You can work through the book in order, or use individual sections to target a particular weakness.
Learn
A reference table teaches twenty words with definitions and exam-style example sentences.
Practise
Spot the Misuse and Purposeful or Padded? do the heavy lifting here — both are about control rather than recall.
Apply
Sentence Upgrade (Grade 4 → Grade 8) and Two Words, One Sentence push the vocabulary into your own writing.
What you get across the 104 pages
Feeling States · Difficult People · Voice & Tone (Informal Register II)
Time, Change & Consequence · Precision & Evidence · Cause, Effect & Position
Quality & Texture · Moral & Social Atmosphere · Motion, Energy & Change
Verbal & Physical Acts · Avoidance & Escape · Damage, Decay & Recovery
Eight per unit — 96 in all — weighted towards judgement and production.
Full Answers & Model Responses, naming why the weaker option fails.
Where this gets you
By the end of the workbook you’ll be writing with precision about evidence, consequence and character, sustaining it across a whole answer rather than in one good sentence, and you’ll have a clearer understanding of how to improve the quality of your answers.
There is no such thing as a “Level 4 word list”. Level 3 sounds like someone starting to reach for it. Level 4 sounds like someone who uses it every time, and always for a reason.
