Book 3 is where the series stops being only about reaching upwards. Alongside units on Complex States, Nuance & Complexity, Power & Influence and Analysis & Evaluation, it includes a full unit on Voice & Register — Informal Vocabulary: the words that are wrong in an essay and exactly right in a speech or a first-person narrative. The rest covers People & Personality, Physical World, Movement & Action, The Human Body & Expression, Social Strategies, Disruption & Resistance and Consequences & Change.
Built for the AQA GCSE English Language (8700) specification — for students sitting the exam in summer 2027, whether you’re resitting or sitting it for the first time.

Why one register is not enough
You have been told to write formally, so you write formally everywhere — including the speech and the first-person narrative where a plainer word would have landed harder. And when a position is genuinely mixed, the vocabulary flattens it: you end up agreeing or disagreeing when what you meant was somewhere in between. The difficulty is rarely a small vocabulary. It is not knowing which register the task is actually asking for.
This workbook breaks that skill into clear, manageable steps, helping you understand what examiners are looking for and apply it independently.
Built for a specific gap, not a general topic
This workbook is suitable for you if you are:
- Preparing for AQA GCSE English Language
- Already writing formally and now in need of range — register, power, nuance and consequence
- Working independently, with a tutor, in class or revising at home
Five things you’ll be able to do
Ambitious does not always mean formal. Book 3 is the book that teaches the difference.
Choose an informal word deliberately, because the form and audience call for it — not because a formal one didn’t come to mind.
Write about a position you partly agree with, using vocabulary that holds two ideas at once.
Describe influence, pressure and resistance precisely, instead of falling back on “powerful” and “strong”.
Reach for analytical vocabulary in Question 4 and Question 3 answers that shows judgement, not just coverage.
Apply these skills confidently in exam-style questions.
Guided first, independent by the end
The activities build gradually from explanation and guided practice to independent exam-style work. The eight-exercise sequence is unchanged, which matters more in this book than any other — you need a stable format when the judgement calls get genuinely arguable. You can work through the book in order, or use individual sections to target a particular weakness.
Learn
A reference table teaches the unit’s twenty words with definitions and exam-style sentences, then Gap Fill settles them.
Practise
Connotation Sort gets harder here on purpose — some items are arguable, and you have to be ready to justify your answer.
Apply
Sentence Upgrade and Two Words, One Sentence ask you to produce the vocabulary in writing of your own.
What you get across the 104 pages
Complex States · Voice & Register (Informal Vocabulary) · People & Personality
Nuance & Complexity · Power & Influence · Analysis & Evaluation
Physical World · Movement & Action · The Human Body & Expression
Social Strategies · Disruption & Resistance · Consequences & Change
Eight per unit — 96 in all — including the judgement tasks where more than one answer can be defended.
Full Answers & Model Responses, with reasoning you can argue against.
Where this gets you
By the end of the workbook you’ll be able to move between registers on purpose, write about power, nuance and consequence in language a reader can follow exactly, and have a clearer understanding of how to improve the quality of your answers.
There is no such thing as a “Level 4 word list”. Level 3 sounds like someone starting to reach for it. Level 4 sounds like someone who uses it every time, and always for a reason.
